Bling Bomb- An Environmental Art Exhibition by Mollie Tonneson
On February 8, 2025, we were honored to provide an exhibition space for Springfield local recycled-balloon artist Mollie Tonneson. As an environmental artist, she focuses on overlooked “celebration waste” and transforms it into works that invite reflection and conversation.
Some of the materials in this exhibition come from discarded Mylar balloons found locally: some recovered from forests, others mailed to her from coastlines across the country. She cuts and reshapes these non-biodegradable materials into child-sized garments, as well as bouquets, umbrellas, jewelry, and other objects. At first glance, the pieces shimmer and appear visually appealing; yet upon closer inspection, viewers realize they are not symbols of joy, but remnants of a consumption-driven culture.
Through this striking visual contrast, Mollie hopes to raise awareness of overconsumption. Every material carries its own story: balloons purchased for celebration and fleeting happiness often end up lingering in forests and along shorelines, unable to decompose. Is that brief moment of joy truly worth the long-term environmental cost? This is the question she hopes visitors will carry with them after experiencing the exhibition.

We also warmly welcome local and visiting environmental artists to exhibit their work or host talks and lectures, and we are happy to provide a space that supports these meaningful exchanges and creative practices.
